OET Speaking Nurse Role Play Card – Fever / Infection
The OET Speaking test for Nurses can be challenging, especially when managing patients who are worried about infections and medication. This Fever / Infection role-play scenario is designed to help nurses confidently practice one of the most common OET speaking situations.
In this scenario, you will take the role of a nurse in a clinic or emergency setting, interacting with a patient who presents with fever and flu-like symptoms. The patient is anxious about the cause of the fever and asks whether antibiotics are required — a classic OET examiner test case that assesses safe communication, reassurance, and professional boundaries
Setting: Emergency Room / Clinic
Role Player (Patient)
- 30-year-old patient with fever for two days
- Chills, body aches, and headache
- Over-the-counter medicines gave little relief
- Worried about infection
- Asks if antibiotics are needed
Candidate (You – Nurse)
- Ask about duration and severity of fever
- Ask about associated symptoms
- Check medicines already taken
- Respond appropriately to antibiotic request
- Explain need for doctor assessment
- Avoid diagnosing or prescribing
- Reassure the patient and close professionally
